Learning & Development

Discovering Stuff

Encouraging collaboration, curiosity and making decisions through the freedom to choose.  Your child will be supported to learn how to collaborate with others through play. We believe making strong relationships with others is such a valuable life skill and is vital for preparation for primary school.

We have a high staff to child ratio meaning that there is always a teacher close at hand to help your child get the most out of their day and the learning that is taking place. Our teachers skilfully introduce new concepts and topics to build upon your child’s interests.

The Lakes Nursery and Preschool is inspired by various approaches to early education and therefore we celebrate a blended learning approach. Including; Reggio- Originated in Italy is a holistic education based on the belief that your child is unique and will express this interest in numerous ways. Reggio revolves around the child’s senses relying on sight, sound, touch and smell.

Curiosity approach- this approach aims to create thinkers and doers by putting the child at the centre of their own learning. We use everyday items around the setting to encourage children’s natural curiosity and eagerness to explore and create.
Hygge- is a Danish word used when acknowledging a feeling or moment, ordinary or extra ordinary as cosy, charming or special. Hygge within our setting provides children with a sense of security and wellbeing. An extension of their home.
Forest school approach- is an inspiring process, a specialised approach to outdoor learning that aims to develop confidence and self-esteem through hands on learning outdoors.

Every child is an individual
We believe a child’s educational, social, emotional and physical development all go hand in hand. It follows that every child should be treated as a ‘whole person’ – and, crucially, as an individual - wherever they are developmentally. Because we want to encourage and celebrate individuality, we often run ‘in the moment’ activities, borne out of the spontaneous interests of the children. Add this to the long list of pre-organised activities on offer, and the result is a very rounded, fluid and responsive approach to aiding children’s development and building their confidence as individuals.
A stimulating learning environment
Given the right tools in the right environment, children can truly thrive – which is what helps them learn and develop socially, linguistically, intellectually and physically. We want children to learn about their environment – so gardening is on the agenda. We want them understand food and health – cue mixing bowls and sticky fingers. By giving them the opportunity to engage in a diverse range of activities, we nurture their communication, listening, co-ordination and co-operation skills, all of which will stand them in good stead for school… and life beyond.
